Dental implants are like special screws placed in your jaw to hold new teeth. Sometimes, the soft tissue, or gums, around these implants can get sick, which is called peri-implant mucositis. This happens to about 20% of people with implants. It can be worse if you smoke or don't keep your teeth clean. If your gums are too thin, it can make the bone around the implant wear away. To keep the gums healthy, doctors say you need at least 2 mm of keratinized tissue (a type of tough gum tissue) around the implant. If not, it might hurt to brush, and your gums could become inflamed or shrink.
