Study Overview: This study is looking at cases of spiking (when someone secretly adds drugs to drinks, food, or uses a needle) in Ghent. If you visit one of the four emergency departments in Ghent and think you've been spiked, you can join the study. You'll answer questions about your symptoms and drug or alcohol use. If you come within 48 hours, they’ll take blood and urine samples; if between 48 and 96 hours, only urine is needed.
The samples will be tested for drugs using different tests, such as immunoassay (a test that uses antibodies to detect substances) and LC-GCMS (a method for identifying chemicals). Results can be added to your medical file if you want. You can't join if it's been over 5 days since the event, or if there's suspicion of drug-assisted sexual assault—those cases are handled separately.
