Purpose: This study is testing if a special breathing treatment called mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E), or a "mechanical cough assistant," helps increase the number of organ donors. It looks at how well lungs work in people who are brain dead or whose heart has stopped.
Who: 160 organ donors, all older than 18 years, will take part. These donors are from four different hospitals in Spain. The study splits them into two groups:
- P1: Follow national guidelines.
- P2: Follow national guidelines plus use MI-E and other techniques.
Measurements: The study will check lung function, how well the lungs expand, and any changes in X-rays. It aims to see if more lungs can be used for donations in the P2 group compared to P1.
- Participation involves following specific care guidelines for organ donors.
- It is a detailed study requiring careful monitoring of donor lung health.
- No direct compensation is mentioned for participation.
Note: Participants cannot join if they have conditions that make MI-E or organ donation unsafe.
