Spironolactone Safety in African Americans With Mild Cognitive Impairment and Early Alzheimer's Disease

Recruiting

Phase 4

This study is looking at a blood pressure medicine called **spironolactone** to see if it can help African American adults with memory problems. These problems are known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and are the early signs of Alzheimer's. Spironolactone blocks a hormone called aldosterone, which can affect blood pressure and memory. In this study, participants will take either spironolactone or a placebo (a pill that looks like the medicine but has no effect) for one year.

  • Participants will have 4 to 5 visits over a year.
  • Researchers will check memory, thinking, and blood vessels at the start and end.
  • Participants will be monitored for any side effects during the study.

This study is important because it might find a new use for spironolactone that could help preserve brain health as people age. If successful, it could lead to bigger studies and help African Americans, who are more likely to develop Alzheimer's, find new ways to protect their memory and thinking skills. 🧠💊
